Levels 3, 4 and 5 NVQ in Management

Aims

·         To provide ongoing opportunities for staff involved in the team leading/management functions to develop their practical competence in the workplace to nationally determined and recognised standards

·         To motivate participants to engage in developmental activity, based on their existing competence, personal career goals and the demands of the workplace

·         To enable employers to identify participants’ current potential and their development needs within the team leading/management functions

Level 3 in Management is for a practising first line manager/junior manager with

·         a tightly defined area of responsibility

·         some limited opportunity for taking decisions and managing budgets

·         responsibility for achieving specific results by using resources effectively, and

·         responsibility for allocating work to team members, colleagues or contractors.

Level 4 in Management is for a practising middle manager with responsibility for

·         allocating work to others

·         achieving specific results by using resources effectively

·         carrying out policy in his/her area of responsibility

·         controlling limited financial budgets, and

·         contributing to broader activities, such as change programmes and recruitment

Level 5 in Management is for a senior manager who

·         has operational responsibility for substantial programmes and resources

·         has a broad span of control

·         pro-actively identifies and implements change and quality improvements

·         negotiates budgets and contracts, and

·         leads high level meetings

Entry Requirements

Whilst there are no prior entry requirements in terms of knowledge, attainment or experience, an appropriate knowledge and understanding of underpinning principles of leadership and the management process will need to be demonstrated.

Progression

Successful candidates at all levels may expect to benefit from enhanced career prospects within management and leadership.

Successful candidates at levels 3 and 4 may progress on to a higher level NVQ – either in management or another appropriate occupational area – provided that their circumstances allow for competence to be demonstrated against the appropriate national occupational standards.

Alternatively, candidates may choose to progress to a vocationally related programme – in management and leadership or another appropriate occupational area.    This option may be preferable where the opportunity to demonstrate competence at a higher level within management is not yet present, but the candidate wishes to begin development and acquisition of relevant knowledge and skills.

ILM Membership

Successful completion of the NVQs in Team Leading/Management offers eligibility for ILM membership as follows:

Level:

Grade of Membership:

ILM Level 3

Associate Member (AMInstLM)

ILM Level 4 or 5

Minimum grade of Member (MInstLM)

Programme Outline

A full NVQ Level, 3, 4 or 5 in Management is available to any candidate who is able to demonstrate competence as defined by the relevant national occupational standards.

Certificates of unit credit are available for individual units.  Candidates who have previously achieved any of the units whilst attaining other qualifications containing any of the management and leadership units will, of course, be credited with these units towards attainment of the relevant team leading or management qualification.

In order to achieve any unit candidates must demonstrate that they meet all of the stated outcomes and behaviours and every item of knowledge and understanding (general; industry/sector and context specific).

Outline of NVQs at Levels 3-5

Outlines of the qualifications at levels 3-5 are shown below.

There are five units which have been imported and are therefore presented in a slightly different format, as they have been developed by other standards setting bodies.  These units contain elements which have performance criteria, knowledge requirements, and evidence requirements.  The units which have been identified below must be evidenced and assessed in line with the guidance for those units.

The table below indicates the number of mandatory and optional units in each of the Management NVQs:
